Practical test

About the practical exam

The practical driving test starts with an eyesight test ensuring you can read a standard number plate from a distance of 20.5 metres, followed by a series of 'show me, tell me' questions about basic car maintenance and the operation of controls in the vehicle.  It then involves 35 - 40 minutes of driving incorporating different road conditions and set manoeuvres including hill starts and reversing. Throughout the test the examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving, as well as good awareness, observation skills and control of the vehicle.

Passing the test

The more supervised practice you can get in addition to your professional lessons, the better. Recent UK research has shown that those people who have at least 40 hours of driver training are more likely to pass their practical driving test first time.   At the end of the day, once you have passed your driving test, you are in charge of and responsible for controlling a potentially lethal weapon!!! so it makes sense to practice in as many different traffic/weather situations as possible.

Lessons

Each lesson is tailored to the individual needs and abilities of the student.

You will have a recap of the previous lesson and the opportunity to ask any questions that may have arisen from that, followed by a short conversation about the goals of the upcoming lesson. The routes you take on each lesson will have been carefully chosen to allow you to consolidate the knowledge and skills already acquired and work on the new skills to accomplish the set goals for the lesson.

At the end of the lesson, you will talk through how the lesson went, and you will have the opportunity to ask any questions. Should you have the opportunity to practice outside of lessons with family/friends, we can also give you an idea of areas to practice.

In the lessons leading up to your test, routes that are frequently used by the examiners will be covered.  A mock test will also be included in these lessons to prepare you for test day, so you know what to expect and hopefully combat some of those nerves!

Theory test

About the theory test

With the new more extensive theory test and the introduction of the hazard perception test in November 2016, passing the theory test is by no means easy.  The theory test is a multiple choice test of 50 questions based on the UK and Jersey Highway codes.

To pass, a minimum score of 43 is needed. The hazard perception test, which needs to be passed at the same time as the theory test, consists of a series of short video clips of actual road hazards that need to be identified.

Study, revision & practice

You will DEFINITELY need a copy of the Official Highway code for both the UK and Jersey.  A Copy of Driving: The Essential skills will also be of a huge benefit for study. These 3 documents provide EVERYTHING you need to know for the theory test.

There are also many apps around to help with revision as well.  The most relevant one being the Official Islands Theory Test App available on Apple only.  A windows/android version is available at DVS.
